Leaf Chain
LL series leaf chain is comprised of link plates having the same contour and pitch as those of roller link plates of the same pitch DIN standard roller chain. The pins are the same diameter as that of the same pitch DIN standard roller chain. The lacing options are 2X2, 4X4, and 6X6. The LL series is a light-duty roller chain. It is manufactured to ISO 4347 and ANSI B29.8 for forklifts, rocker shovels, machine tool balancing, and other hoisting equipment.
Leaf Chain Design
The plates of leaf chains are punched from high-grade steel and are subsequently hardened and tempered to guarantee high fatigue strength. Very narrow tolerances ensure that all plates bear the same load proportions. Pins made of high alloy case-hardened steel are tempered to achieve high wear resistance. The tightly adjoining plates are designed in various combinations and rotate on the pins. One special design is the heavy-duty type series U. On chains of this type all plates are mounted with a sliding fit and are also secured with laterally attached riveted disks.
This design guarantees an even load distribution and reduces the bending load of the pins. These chains were especially developed for heavy loads and operations under harsh conditions. Due to their high fatigue strength they are particularly suitable for such application areas. Due to their design (no tooth meshing) leaf chains cannot transmit torques. Their force direction, however, can easily be deflected by means of rollers. Even with a small working width they have a high breaking load.

LL Series Leaf Chains and Strength
Leaf chains are famous with engineers for their strength in materials handling, such as with forklifts, lift trucks, lift masts, straddle carriers, and other major works of civil engineering. Their long service life, high fatigue strength and maximum wear resistance make them the ideal solution for long-term projects that need to be both reliable and incredibly strong. The compact design of leaf chains allows them to fit well within a variety of systems. The key parts of a leaf chain include:
- Link Plates: Close control of the plate dimensions allows for high fatigue strength and long service life.
- Pins: The pins pass through the plates and are subject to shearing forces, while the plates articulate on the pins through rotation over the sheave.
LL Series Leaf Chain Applications
LL Series Leaf Chains are constructed with stacked plates and pins to provide high strength for various high-load applications. LL series leaf chain is ideal for heavy-duty hanging, balancing, or motion transmission applications like:
- Forklifts
- Material Handling
- Lift trucks
- Container lifts
- Machine tools
- Elevator and oven doors
- Spinning frames

LL Series Leaf Chain
LL Series Leaf Chains are comprised of link plates having the same contour and pitch as those of the roller link plates of the same pitch DIN/ISO standard roller chains. The pins are of the same diameters as those of the same pitch DIN/ISO standard roller chains. This type of leaf chain has all slip link plates. The two ends of pins are press fit to washers. This design allows for even distribution of load, reduces pin bending, and increases the working load. This type of leaf chain is designed to transport heavy loads in harsh environments.
How Environment Affects Leaf Chain?
Each specific leaf chain application will need to be evaluated for risk according to the extent of environmental exposure it is subject to and the area in which it operates. There are four key environmental conditions that impact leaf chainwear-life:
1) Moisture
Moisture produces corrosive rusting (or oxidisation of the leaf chain steel) which can lead to a reduction in the strength of the leaf chain through the processes of pitting and cracking.
2) Low Temperature
When a lift truck’s daily activity involves constantly moving in and out of cold stores, condensation can form on the outer and bearing surfaces of the chain. This condensation can cause stiffness and eventually result in corrosion fatigue cracking which will reduce the service life of a leaf chain.
3) Chemical Solutions or Vapours
Chemical solutions and vapors can corrode leaf chain components, anchor pins, anchor bolts, and anchor blocks and cause microscopic stress cracking. Depending on the extent of exposure, these cracks can propagate across the leaf chain leading to complete and abrupt failure.
4) Abrasives
Accelerated wearing or scoring of the pin surfaces and link plate apertures will inevitably lead to reduced leaf chain strength. The bearing surfaces of these articulating members are not readily accessible, which means that the wear is not usually visible – so the extent of leaf chain wear should be regularly inspected using a precision tool such as a Chain Wear Gauge.
Leaf Chain Manufacturing Process
The basic technological process of leaf chain manufacturing includes raw material preparation, parts processing (chain plates, pins), rolling processing, parts heat treatment, surface treatment, parts oiling, assembly, and other steps.
- Selected high-quality raw materials
Leaf chain carefully selects high-performance raw materials, including high-quality carbon structural steel, alloy structural steel, and spring steel, and strictly controls the raw materials.
- Rigorous and comprehensive raw material testing
We has advanced and complete testing laboratories at each of our factories, which conduct scientific and rigorous comprehensive testing of each raw material to ensure that they meet the quality and safety requirements.
- High-quality and efficient parts processing
The parts are processed by high-precision, high-speed punches, high-speed cutting equipment, etc.
- Heat treatment of parts
The fully automated mesh belt furnace line, rotary furnaces, converter, and other equipment are used to process the leaf chain parts to improve the strength and toughness of the leaf chain.
- Assembly
The leaf chain goes through automated assembly and testing production lines to accurately and efficiently assemble the finished leaf chain.
- Finished product inspection
Before leaving the factory, the leaf chain needs to complete a series of inspections and tests, including chain performance tests such as tension, wear, and fatigue.
